Abu Darda: A Companion of Knowledge and Balance

All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. We seek His help and His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evil within ourselves and from our bad deeds. Peace and blessings be upon the final messenger, Muhammad ﷺ, upon his family, his companions, and all those who follow them until the Day of Judgment.
Today we will speak about a man who was a remarkable companion and one of the greatest scholars among the companions of the Prophet ﷺ.
That man is Abu Darda (رضي الله عنه).
When scholars speak about the companions, it is rare to describe one of them specifically as “the scholar of the companions.” Yet Abu Darda earned that description because of his knowledge, wisdom, and deep understanding of faith.
His Early Life
Abu Darda’s real name was Uwaymir ibn Malik. He was from the Ansar of Madinah, the group who welcomed the Prophet ﷺ and supported Islam after the migration from Makkah.
Before accepting Islam, Abu Darda was a successful merchant. Trade was his main occupation, and he was known as a capable businessman.
Like many people of his time, he initially followed the traditional practices of idol worship. However, he was thoughtful and reflective, and his heart was open to truth.
When Islam spread in Madinah, many of the Ansar accepted the message of the Prophet ﷺ. Eventually Abu Darda also accepted Islam, and once he did, his priorities in life changed completely.
He later said something very powerful:
“I tried to combine trade and worship, but I could not manage both. So I chose worship.”
This statement shows the transformation in his heart. Worldly success was no longer his main goal. Instead, he dedicated himself to knowledge, worship, and the remembrance of Allah.
Brotherhood with Salman al-Farisi
When the Prophet ﷺ established bonds of brotherhood between companions, Abu Darda was paired with Salman al-Farisi.
One famous story between them shows the balance that Islam teaches.
Salman once visited Abu Darda’s home and noticed that Abu Darda was fasting constantly and praying long hours at night. At the same time, he was neglecting other responsibilities, including spending time with his family.
Salman advised him with wisdom. He said:
“Your Lord has a right over you. Your body has a right over you. Your family has a right over you. So give each their right.”
When the Prophet ﷺ heard about this advice, he confirmed it by saying:
“Salman has spoken the truth.”
This story teaches an important lesson: Islam encourages balance. Worship is essential, but so is caring for family, health, and responsibilities.
His Knowledge and Wisdom
Abu Darda was known among the companions for his deep knowledge of the Qur’an and Islamic understanding.
He loved learning and teaching. His gatherings were filled with reminders about the Hereafter, humility, and sincerity.
Many of his sayings became famous for their wisdom. For example, he used to remind people that true knowledge should lead to humility, not arrogance.
He would often encourage people to reflect on their lives and remember the temporary nature of this world.
One of his well-known reminders was that knowledge must come before actions, and that people should seek knowledge before it disappears.
His Life in Damascus
Later in life, Abu Darda moved to Damascus. At that time, Islam was spreading to new lands, and scholars were needed to teach the Qur’an and guide people.
Abu Darda became one of the great teachers of Damascus.
Large circles of students would gather around him to learn the Qur’an. Some historical reports mention that hundreds or even thousands of students studied under him.
He did not only teach recitation. He also taught:
-
Islamic character
-
Wisdom and reflection
-
Detachment from worldly distractions
His teaching style was gentle but powerful. He focused on purifying the heart.
His View of the World
Abu Darda was known for his simple lifestyle.
Even though he had once been a merchant, he no longer cared about wealth or luxury. His concern was always the Hereafter.
He reminded people that this world is temporary and that real success is the success with Allah.
He would often encourage believers to remember death, accountability, and the Day of Judgment so that their actions would remain sincere.

Several qualities made Abu Darda special:
1. Wisdom
He was known for giving short but powerful advice that people remembered for years.
2. Humility
Despite his knowledge, he remained humble and approachable.
3. Devotion
